Biography. The English sculptor Anne Seymour Damer was born in Berkshire in 1748. Damer spent her youth in the care of her cousin Horace Walpole, who praised her work as an artist. She inherited the Strawberry Hill House from Walpole in 1797. In 1767, she married John Damer, son of Lord Milton, later the 1st Earl of Dorchester.

29 de jun. de 2022 · Damer was born Anne Conway, the only daughter British Field-Marshal Henry Seymour Conway and Caroline Bruce (the daughter of the Duke of Argyll.) In 1766, at the age of 17, Damer was introduced into society and sketched by Angelica Kaufmann in the character of Ceres, which was completed into a painting by an unknown artist in 1800.
Anne Damer was celebrated as Britain’s first woman sculptor who portrayed both animals and people with memorable personal style. Noble-born and highly educated, Damer inscribed the Shock Dog with her name in Greek to recall her art’s classical origins.
