  1. Harry Edmund Martinson, född 6 maj 1904 i Jämshög i Blekinge, död 11 februari 1978 i Solna (vid tiden bosatt i Sollentuna), var en svensk författare. Martinson var ledamot av Svenska Akademien ( stol nr 15 ) från 1949 [ 1 ] och mottog Nobelpriset i litteratur 1974 , tillsammans med Eyvind Johnson – den senaste gången som ett nobelpris i litteratur har delats mellan två personer.

He was left an orphan at an early age, and after a chequered childhood, in which the children’s homes and institutions were as numerous as the escapes, he went to sea at the age of sixteen, spending six years of his life on board various ships and as a workman in foreign countries.

After his father, a merchant, died of tuberculosis, his mother immigrated to the US leaving her seven children with foster families in the countryside.
