1675 - Charles II founds the Royal Observatory. 6 February 1685 - Charles II dies. He is succeeded to the throne by his younger brother James, who becomes King James I. 15 July 1685 - Charles II’s eldest illegitimate son, James, the Duke of Monmouth, tries to seize the throne, but is stopped and executed for treason.

The Presbyterians had lectured him constantly about morality and told him that kings were merely the vassals of God, like everyone else, and so he had no desire to go north again.

Due to the lengthy preparations and the fact that a new set of regalia had to be made for the occasion, as the previous set had been melted down during the Commonwealth period, his coronation did not take place in the Abbey until 23rd April 1661. The cost was over £12,000.
Charles II’s boyhood was spent in England, surrounded by the treasures of his parents' superlative art collection; from 1645 he spent the formative part of his youth at the French court (his young cousin was Louis XIV) and then at The Hague, and must have seen a wealth of art at the palaces and in the collections there.
