Sir Ian Murray McKellen, CH, CBE ( Burnley ( Noord-Engeland ), 25 mei 1939) is een Engels acteur. McKellen is bij het grote publiek vooral bekend van zijn rol als Magneto in de zes X-Men -films, en als tovenaar Gandalf in de trilogieën The Lord of the Rings en The Hobbit. Ook speelt hij de rol van Sir Leigh Teabing in de film The Da Vinci Code.
For over a decade, he toured his one-man show, Acting Shakespeare. McKellen is recognised worldwide as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He received his first Academy Award ® nomination, for Best Actor, as the gay film director James Whale, in Bill Condon's 1998 classic Gods and Monsters.
