Maria and her sisters received dancing, music and drawing lessons. Her childhood sketchbook (1826–1830) has survived and it is in the hands of her descendants living in the United States. Grand Duchess Maria, who painted fairly well, later made watercolors. She never lost her love for the arts, becoming a benefactress and art collector.

26 de jun. de 2018 · In early 1917, Maria fell ill with the measles and pneumonia and nearly died. She was actually the last of the children to catch the measles. She was not told of her father’s abdication until she had begun to recover. After her father’s abdication, Maria was initially under house arrest with the rest of her family.
