Karl August, Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (31 July 1844 – 20 November 1894) was a German prince and Hereditary Grand Duke ( Erbgroßherzog) of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
Frederick was the second son of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I of Saxe-Weimar (1562–1602) from his second marriage to Anna Maria (1575–1643), daughter of Philipp Ludwig, Count Palatine of Neuburg. After the death of his father Frederick inherited the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg jointly with his brothers Johann Philipp , Johann Wilhelm and Friedrich Wilhelm II .

Biography. Born in Weimar, Karl Alexander was the second but eldest surviving son of Karl Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. His mother engaged as tutor for Karl the Swiss scholar Frédéric Soret who became a close acquaintance to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
