He was the first child of Don José Ruiz y Blasco (1838–1913) and María Picasso y López. Picasso's family was of middle-class background. His father was a painter who specialized in naturalistic depictions of birds and other game. For most of his life, Ruiz was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum.

Pablo Ruiz Picasso[1] (Málaga, 25 de octubre de 1881-Mougins, 8 de abril de 1973) fue un pintor y escultor español, creador, junto con Georges Braque, del cubismo. Es considerado desde el génesis del siglo XX como uno de los mayores pintores que participaron en muchos movimientos artísticos que se propagaron por el mundo y ejercieron una gran influencia en otros grandes artistas de su tiempo.
José Ruiz Blasco, who came from a better-placed family and 17 years older than María, had previously gone out with the girl's cousin, but eventually she would be the chosen one. María Picasso, always busy with household chores, was the emotional and practical pillar of the family.
Don José Ruiz y Blasco began schooling his son in drawing and oil painting when the boy was seven, and he found the young Pablo to be an apt pupil. Picasso attended the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where his father taught, at 13 years of age.
