The foundation of the original building was laid in April 1880 and the college opened in 1883. The buildings have since been deconsecrated.

This led Robert de Holland to take the advice of the Bishop of Lichfield to convert the site to a monastic Benedictine priory. It was the largest and last of four Benedictine monasteries to be founded in Lancashire.
