While doing research for the two historical novels I wrote with them as the main characters, I spent as much time in the 16th and 17th centuries as I did in the 21st one. The more I learned about them the more I concluded they were truly an amazing couple.

Her devotion to her husband sets quite an example for modern-day couples. Granted she lived under much more restrictive social codes and mores than we do today, but her willingness to fill her role as her husband's emotional support is clear.

  6. Mary Brewster's maiden name is unknown. She was born around 1569 and married William Brewster around 1592. Mary had 5 surviving children with William. The two youngest journeyed with their parents on Mayflower, while the three elder children joined their family on later ships. Mary died on April 17, 1627 in Plymouth.
