Eleanor de Clare, suo jure 6th Lady of Glamorgan (October 1292 [3] – 30 June 1337) was a powerful Anglo-Welsh noblewoman who married Hugh Despenser the Younger, the future favourite of Edward II of England, and was a granddaughter of Edward I of England.

Eleanor de Clare, suo jure 6th Lady of Glamorgan (3 October 1292 – 30 June 1337) was a powerful Anglo-Welsh noblewoman who married Hugh Despenser the Younger and was a granddaughter of Edward I of England.[2][3] She was born in 1292 at Caerphilly in Glamorgan, Wales.

Despenser the Younger rose to become Chamberlain and a close advisor to King Edward II, much as Despenser the Elder had been. Despenser the Younger claimed the Lordship of Glamorgan in 1317 [5] through his wife Eleanor de Clare. He then accumulated more lands in the Welsh Marches and in England.

She died in 1360 aged 65 – the last of the de Clare ladies to have become entangled in the politics of the 14th century. The Tower of London where Eleanor Despenser stayed with the young Prince John whilst her husband fought his last battle in 1326, and where later she was held prisoner by Roger Mortimer.
