Gebhard was the son of Count Bernhard of Supplinburg (d. about 1069) and his wife Ida of Querfurt, a niece of Saint Bruno of Querfurt.

  5. Hedwig's first husband was Gebhard of Supplinburg. [1] . According to the Sächsische Weltchronik, Gebhard had to overcome the resistance of his rivals, the counts of Goseck, relatives of Archbishop Adalbert of Bremen, who tried to have the marriage annulled.

  6. Lothar, the son of Gebhard, count of Supplinburg, was born a few days before his father was killed in battle on June 9, 1075. He succeeded to extensive lands around Helmstedt, in Saxony, and in 1088 became involved in an uprising against the Holy Roman emperor Henry IV.

The village developed next to a 10th century water castle at the Schunter river, probably erected by the Counts of Haldensleben who then held the office of margraves of the Northern March. Gertrud von Haldensleben's daughter, Hedwig of Formbach, married Count Gebhard of Supplinburg.
