He went to live with relatives in Barcelona. His mother, Nancy Hambley Hughes, was an actress-singer with the D'Oyly Carte Company.

George is the recipient of the President’s Appreciation Award and the Theodore C. Burgess Award for Excellence in Interdepartmental Collaboration from Bradley University.
