As a co-educational boarding and day school, all applications to study at Ripon Grammar School are by academic selection only. There are three main admission points, at Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12 (Sixth Form), but In-Year testing can be arranged in any year and, if successful and if vacancies arise, students can be admitted to the school.

A short history of Ripon Grammar School. There has been a grammar school in Ripon since Anglo-Saxon times when a school was attached to the Collegiate Church of St Wilfrid. The first recorded reference to the school dates from the Middle Ages and thereafter the history is well-documented.
