The Reformed Theological Academy of Sárospatak was founded as a town school in the first wave of the Hungarian Reformation. During its first years it followed the spirit of the Lutheran Reformation. Later it accepted the Calvinist movement. The school had its first golden period in the 17th century.

The Reformed Theological Academy of Sárospatak is a higher education institution of the Reformed Church of Hungary. It is an independent legal body maintained by the Tiszáninnen Reformed Church District. As an academic institution of the Reformed College of Sárospatak (founded in 1531), it has trained ministers for centuries.
