In later life, he became a brigadier general in the U.S. Regular Army and Inspector General of the Army as well as a major general of volunteers in the Spanish–American War .

  3. Joseph Cabell Breckinridge (July 14, 1788 – September 1, 1823) was an American lawyer, soldier, slaveholder and politician in Kentucky. From 1816 to 1819, he represented Fayette County in the Kentucky House of Representatives, and fellow members elected him as their speaker (1817 to 1819).

  4. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Breckinridge left his home state to study at Centre College (Kentucky) and at the University of Virginia. Unlike the vast majority of his kinsmen and his classmates at the University of Virginia, chose not to fight with the Confederate Army but with the Union.

  5. Joseph Cabell Breckinridge was born on January 14, 1842, in Baltimore, Maryland, into the prominent southern Breckinridge family. His family moved to Kentucky by 1847. Breckinridge attended Centre College in Kentucky for a year before enrolling at the University of Virginia in 1858.
