Howard, William George, 8th Earl of Carlisle (1808 -1889) William George Howard was born in London, the son of George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church College, Oxford. He succeeded to the title on the death of his elder brother, George Howard, 7th Earl of Carlisle, on December 5, 1864.
The 1st Earl of Carlisle, Charles Howard (1629-1685) was the great grandson of Lord William Howard (1563-1640), the youngest son of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, whose skill at marrying heiresses eventually led to his execution.
