James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, 3rd Earl of Avondale KG (1426–1491) was a Scottish nobleman, last of the 'Black' earls of Douglas.
James Douglas, 9th earl of Douglas (born 1426—died July 14, 1488, Lindores Abbey, Fife, Scot.) was the last of the first line of the earls of Douglas, caught in the internal wars of Scotland and the intrigues with the English.

The king called a halt to the hard fought tournament before anyone was killed. He succeeded to the earldom on the murder of his brother William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas by King James II and his entourage.
The title was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1358 for William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, son of Sir Archibald Douglas, Guardian of Scotland. The Earldom was forfeited by James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, in 1455.
