  6. Biography. Hills father, who sat for Down in the Irish Parliament until he succeeded as 2nd marquess of Downshire in 1793, was a staunch opponent of the Union and committed suicide in 1801. 1 Hill, a career army officer, served directly under the duke of Wellington in the Peninsula.
