John Sherman "Johnny" Rutherford III [1] (born March 12, 1938), also known as " Lone Star JR ", is an American former automobile racing driver. During an Indy Car career that spanned more than three decades, he scored 27 wins and 23 pole positions in 314 starts.

Born John Sherman Rutherford III, this distinguished American racer made Texas his home and so not for nothing became nicknamed ‘Lone Star JR’ during a glittering career which saw him win the Indy 500 twice for McLaren, earning him a worthy position in our personal Top 50 team drivers even though he never so much as sat in an F1™ car, let alone competed in one.
Johnny Rutherford. JOHNNY RUTHERFORD’s outstanding record includes three Indianapolis 500 triumphs (1974, 1976, and 1980) and victories in 24 additional championship races on other tracks, including the 1974 Pocono 500 (Pennsylvania) and the 1986 Michigan 500 (Brooklyn, Michigan).
