Peter Rawson Taft (April 14, 1785 – January 1, 1867) was an American lawyer, judge, and legislator. His son Alphonso Taft served as the U.S. Secretary of War (1876), and U.S. Attorney General (1876–1877). Alphonso was the father and Peter was the grandfather of President William Howard Taft .
The original portraits in this room are of Louise, Alphonso, and his parents, Peter Rawson and Sylvia Howard Taft. They were made in 1859 after persuading Grandpa Taft to agree to a sitting. The grandparents were major influences in the daily life of the household although they did not entertain as much as the younger Tafts.

Taft was Managing Editor of the Yale Law Journal. After completing law school, Taft served as a law clerk to Judge Richard T. Rives of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

This dynasty that lasted nearly 200 years, included US Secretary of War and Attorney General Alphonso Taft, US President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft, US Senator Robert A Taft, Governor and Senator Robert Taft Jr, and Governor Robert Taft II.
