  7. A seven-piece band, the Gentrys had all attended Treadwell High School in Memphis, Tenn., and they’d come together in 1963 to play dances. They quickly gained popularity, winning contests, including the 1964 Memphis Battle of the Bands, and were given a contract with the independent label Youngstown Records.
