Politician. Government official. Ali Kemal Bey (7 September 1869 – 6 November 1922) was a Turkish journalist, writer, poet, and liberal politician. He was Minister of the Interior for some three months in the government of Damat Ferid Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire.

His son Ali Kemal – Mr Johnson’s great-grandfather – was born in the Ottoman capital. The family retained links to their home, the ruins of which can still be found in Kalfat, but Ali Kemal went on to develop international ties as a journalist, diplomat and, briefly, a minister in the government of the empire's last sultan.
