Sir John Grey Gorton GCMG AC CH (9 September 1911 – 19 May 2002) was an Australian politician, farmer and airman who served as the 19th prime minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971. He held office as the leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, having previously been a senator for Victoria.

John Gorton was elected as Liberal Party leader on 9 January 1968 and was sworn in as Prime Minister the next day. He became the first senator to be appointed Prime Minister. He resigned from the Senate on 31 January to contest the by-election for Holt’s former seat of Higgins on 24 February.
John Gorton, the only Australian prime minister to come from the Senate, was judged variously to be ‘a national disaster’, who was ‘utterly unfitted for the post’; a man ‘ahead of his time’; and the leader who ‘could have been our greatest prime minister’.
