John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, PC, FRS, FSA (4 June 1751 – 13 January 1838) was a British barrister and politician. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain between 1801 and 1806 and again between 1807 and 1827.

Earl of Eldon, in the County Palatine of Durham, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1821 for the lawyer and politician John Scott, 1st Baron Eldon, Lord Chancellor from 1801 to 1806 and again from 1807 to 1827.
John Scott, first Lord Eldon and Lord Chancellor, was the third son of William Scott of Newcastle-upon-Tyne by his second wife, Jane Atkinson. Eldon was born in Love Lane, Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 4 June 1751.

Scott was the son of a Newcastle coal merchant and won a scholarship to University College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1776 and became a KC in 1783. In the same year, he was elected as M.P. for Weobley.
He was appointed lord chief justice of Common Pleas in 1799, becoming Baron Eldon, and lord chancellor in 1801. He served in the cabinets of Addington, Pitt, Perceval, and Liverpool until 1827. Eldon came to symbolize political obscurantism but was an exceptionally able lawyer and in private life good‐natured and even‐tempered.
