Robert Emmett (or Emmet) Rodes (March 29, 1829 – September 19, 1864) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War, and the first of Robert E. Lee's divisional commanders not trained at West Point.

As Robert Rodes prepared his division to exploit a gap in the Union line along the Berryville Pike, a shell fragment hit him in the back of his head, killing him. Regarded by many, including Lee, as one of the finest division commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia, Rodes was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Confederate Major General Robert E. Rodes. After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1848, Robert E. Rodes accepted a position at the same school as an assistant professor until 1851. He then pursued a profession as civil engineer.

As the Union XIX and VI Corps advanced on the Berryville Pike toward Winchester on September 19, a gap opened in the Union line. Early hoped to exploit the breach, and ordered a counterattack. As the assault surged forward, a Union artillery fragment struck Rodes in the head, killing him.
