William Maitland of Lethington (1525 – 9 June 1573) was a Scottish politician and reformer, and the eldest son of poet Richard Maitland. [1] Life. He was educated at the University of St Andrews. [2] William was the renowned "Secretary Lethington" to Mary, Queen of Scots.

William Maitland was at the heart of the Reformation in Scotland, and was a convinced reformer himself, but served a Catholic Regent and a Catholic Queen. This created many tensions in a world where religious conformity was regarded by all as an essential part of the political structure.
Maitland was an outstanding diplomat, employed from the beginning of his career by the Regent Mary of Guise on delicate missions to England and France and subsequently as Mary Stuart’s interlocutor with William Cecil and Queen Elizabeth.
