He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a nonperformer in 1988 and published the autobiography To Be Loved in 1994. In 1998 he was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he became the first living person to receive the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Pioneer Award.
