Melchior Cardinal de Polignac (11 October 1661 – 20 November 1742) was a French diplomat, Cardinal and Neo-Latin poet.
Melchior de Polignac, né à Lavoûte-sur-Loire, près du Puy-en-Velay, le 11 octobre 1661 et mort à Paris le 20 novembre 1741, est un prélat, diplomate et poète français néolatin.
Philologue, orateur et poète latin et français, il fut un familier de la cour de Sceaux. Son œuvre principale est l’Anti-Lucrèce, poème latin de dix à douze mille vers. Il remplaça Bossuet à l’Académie française, le 26 mai 1704, et fut reçu le 2 août 1704 par l’abbé de Clérambault.

Melchior, Marquis de Polignac was descended from one of the oldest families in France. He was the grandson of Madame Pommery, who invented dry champagne when she unsweetened dessert wine so that she could drink it with her meals. When his uncle died in 1907, de Polignac became head of the firm.
