Lapulapu (fl. 1521) or Lapu-Lapu, whose name was first recorded as Çilapulapu, was a datu (chief) of Mactan, an island now part of the Philippines. Lapulapu is known for the 1521 Battle of Mactan, where he and his men defeated Spanish forces led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his native allies Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula.

This is where Lapulapu comes into the picture, as one of them was him ( the other one was called Zula). Also known as Çilapulapu (this is how Pigafetta wrote it), Si Lapulapu (according to José Rizal), Salip Pulaka and Kali Pulako (these last two would be closer to honorific titles than to the name), the truth is that we hardly know much about this character.
Legacy. Lapulapu's resistance to Spanish colonization has made him a symbol of Filipino bravery and defiance. Monuments of Lapulapu have been built all over the Philippines to honor his bravery against the Spaniards.
