Baron, later Count Nikolaus Esterházy de Galántha (English: Nicholas Esterházy of Galántha) (Galanta, 8 April 1583 – Großhöflein, 11 September 1645) was the founder of the West-Hungarian noble House of Esterházy which became one of the grandest and most influential aristocratic families of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The family rose to prominence under Count Nikolaus Esterházy (1583–1645) and his son, Prince Paul Esterházy (1635–1713). In the 17th century, after Nikolaus' acquisitions, the family split into four main family lines:

This day in 1583 marked the birth of Nikolaus Esterházy, the first member of that family who received the title of count. He was the most responsible for the rise of the Esterházy family from a local noble family into one of the most powerful families in the entire Habsburg Monarchy.
