Caterina Visconti (1361 – 17 October 1404) was Duchess of Milan as the second spouse of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the first Duke of Milan, and was the mother of two succeeding Dukes of Milan, Gian Maria and Filippo Maria Visconti.
Caterina Visconti is lending her facial features to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and her two sons to the Saints Cosmas and Damian, who were also brothers and in addition doctors of medicine. This portrait of her was made in the 18th century. The painter richly decorated her dress with her favourite Visconti-Symbol: the wheat ear.
