The Russian sculptor Fedot Shubin studied in Rome. In this portrait he drew on the sculptural conventions of ancient Roman imperial busts to show Catherine, animated and slightly smiling, crowned with a laurel wreath.
In particular, sculpture of this period is associated with Fedot Ivanovich Shubin. Born in a village in the Arkhangelsk region of the far north, Shubin's family were free peasants, unlike the paedial serfs who constituted the majority of Russia's population at that time.
