El capitán Matthew Flinders ( Donington; 16 de marzo de 1774- Londres, 19 de julio de 1814) fue un reputado navegante y cartógrafo inglés que dirigió la segunda circunnavegación de Nueva Holanda, que posteriormente él llamaría « Australia o Terra Australis» y la identificó como un continente.

Matthew Flinders was one of our greatest seafaring explorers, charting much of Australia’s coastline despite a series of trials and wild adventures. An outstanding sailor, surveyor, navigator and scientist, he was a considerate and self-sacrificing leader who looked after all under his command.
Explorador y navegante inglés. Matthew Flinders nació el 16 de marzo de 1774 en Donington, Lincolnshire, Inglaterra. Viajó a Nueva Gales del Sur en 1795 y exploró un estrecho desconocido entonces y que ahora se llama estrecho de Bass, entre Australia y las Tierras de Van Diemen (hoy Tasmania ).
