Sir Alexander Morison M.D. FRCPE FRCP (1 May 1779 – 14 March 1866) was a Scottish physician and alienist (psychiatrist). Life. Morison was born at Anchorfield, near Edinburgh, and was educated at Edinburgh High School and the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated M.D. on 12 September 1799.
Sir Alexander Morison (1779-1866) was an early forensic psychiatrist who specialised in mental and cerebral illness. After studying at Edinburgh’s Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh, he joined the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh where he practised for some years before moving south.

Alexander Morison’s The Physiognomy of Mental Diseases in detail, looking at how the patients were depicted in the portraits and what the accompanying texts reveal about them and about contemporary theories of mental illness. The texts offer a rich source of 19th-century psychopathology and we learn much about the nature of patients’ symptoms
Morison’s first appointment was as Inspecting Physician of Lunatic Asylums in Surrey in 1810. While working in London, Morison was appointed President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1827 to 1829. In 1835, Morison was appointed Physician to the Bethlehem Hospital.
