In the second half of the nineteenth century, Valentin Vodnik (1758–1819), who was recognized as the “first Slovenian poet, scholar, and awakener of our people,” (Committee for Vodnik’s monument 1889: 1), was the most acceptable candidate for the role of the “great man” who would help join the former country folk into the Slovenian nation.
