Admiral Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Torrington (c. 1648 – 13 April 1716) was an English Royal Navy officer, peer and politician.
Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Torrington took the Invitation to William to The Hague, disguised as a simple sailor, and commanded William's invasion fleet during the Glorious Revolution which ousted James II.
Leben. Er trat 1663 in die Royal Navy ein und wurde 1666 zum Lieutenant befördert und erhielt im November desselben Jahres als Captain der Pembroke sein erstes eigenes Kommando. Er diente in den Kriegen gegen die Niederlande ( 1665–1667 und 1672–1674 ). Er kommandierte 1672 die Dreadnought in der Seeschlacht von Solebay.
Royal Navy Admiral Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Torrington, who had advised against engaging the superior French fleet but had been overruled by Queen Mary II of England and her ministers, was court-martialled for his performance during the battle.
4 de dic. de 2015 · In March 1689 Herbert became first lord of the Admiralty. On 1 May he fought the French fleet in the Battle of Bantry Bay. He was created earl of Torrington after the battle. He resigned from the Admiralty at the end of the year to protest the condition of the navy.
