The historic church of St Mary was founded as a collegiate church (administered by a 'college' of a dean and canons) in 1123 by Roger de Newburgh, second Earl of Warwick. The style of Newburgh's church was decidedly Romanesque, with heavy, rounded pillars.
Warwick is best known for its Castle, The Collegiate Church of St. Mary with its tower views and Norman crypt, and the timber-framed buildings of 14th-century Lord Leycester Hospital cluster by the city’s West Gate. The St. John’s House Museum is housed in a Jacobean mansion with gardens.

About. St Mary’s Collegiate Church dominates the overall view of the centre of Warwick with its imposing tower, rebuilt along with much of the church in 1704 by Sir William Wilson after the Great Fire of Warwick. There has been a church on the site since Saxon times, but the Saxon church was rebuilt by Roger de Newburgh in 1123.
Address. Old Square. Warwickshire. CV34 4RA. View map. The landmark pinnacled tower dates from the early 18th century. The reason for this comparatively late date was the huge fire that devastated Warwick in 1694, destroying much of the old church so that the tower and nave had to be rebuilt.
