Conrad I of Württemberg ("Konrad von Wirtinisberc, C (u) onradus de Wirdeberch") was the first ruler of the castle of Wirtemberg from 1083 to 1110, and is first mentioned in 1081. He is considered to be the founder of the Württemberg dynasty.
The first family member mentioned in records was Konrad I, in 1081, who is believed to have built the castle. The Württembergs became counts in the 12th century. In 1250, the House of Hohenstaufen 's reign over the Duchy of Swabia ended; this allowed the Württembergs to expand their territory to include the duchy.

After Frederick's excommunication and deposition by the Council of Lyon, Ulrich joined Anti-king Henry Raspe and William of Holland, against Frederick's son Conrad IV. With Ulrich's support, Conrad IV was defeated. Ulrich used the situation, to develop his power within Swabia.

Ludwig I of Württemberg (c. 1098 – 1158) was Count of Wirtemberg. He reigned from 1143 until 1158 as the third ruler of Württemberg and first in his family line to do so. He acted as a member of the courts for Emperor Conrad III and Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa .
Conrad of Württemberg became heir to the House of Beutelsbach and built the Wirtemberg Castle. Around 1089, he was made Count. Their domains, initially only the immediate surroundings of the castle included, increased steadily, mainly through acquisitions such as those from impoverished homes of Tübingen .
