  1. Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (6 June 1859 – 5 December 1909), he was Major General, Commander of the Life Guard Dragoon Regiment in the Russian army and a music lover, a skillful cellist and composer.

  2. He was christened into the Lutheran faith. Among his godparents were Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm and Grand Duchess Augusta. In Russia he was known as Georgy Georgievich.

  3. Georg Alexander was born in Nice, France, the eldest son of the then Count George of Carlow and his first wife Irina Mikhailovna Raievskya (1892–1955). His father assumed the title Duke of Mecklenburg with the style Serene Highness following his adoption by the head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his uncle Duke Charles Michael.

  4. Succession and marriage. A year later on 6 November 1816 Georg’s father died and he duly succeeded as grand duke. Having been in Switzerland at the time of his father’s death Georg immediately set about returning to Mecklenburg-Strelitz to assume the throne.

  5. Georg August was a member of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
