De Ruyter was born in Vlissingen, the son of lieutenant admiral Michiel de Ruyter and his second wife Cornelia (Neeltje) Engels. He began his naval service on board his father's ship during his expeditions in 1664 and 1665.

  5. This is Engel de Ruyter, the 20-year-old son of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Like his father, he had his portrait painted by Ferdinand Bol, who portrayed Engel as a ruler, despite his youth. The gilt frame of the painting is original. It is richly decorated with attributes that refer to the navy.
