Biography. Titles and styles. Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. Francis I (Francis Stephen; 8 December 1708 – 18 August 1765) was the consort of Maria Theresa of Austria. With his wife, he was the founder of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. From 1728 until 1737 he was Duke of Lorraine, but lost Lorraine when he had to give it to France.
Francis I (born Sept. 12, 1494, Cognac, France—died March 31, 1547, Rambouillet) was the king of France (1515–47), the first of five monarchs of the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois.
Francis I was Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Grand Duke of Tuscany.
