Margaret was born at Harbottle Castle in Northumberland on 8 October 1515. [1] [2] Her mother had crossed the border from Scotland when her father was facing difficulties in Scotland. In October 1528, Angus was threatened by James V of Scotland and sent Margaret back over the River Tweed into England at Norham Castle. [3] .
The castle started off as a wooden motte and bailey castle in the 12th century. By 1157 King Henry II had ordered it be replaced by a stone castle. In 1173-4 it was taken by the Scots (probably before the stone-work had even started).
Harbottle, made up of just a single street, is a one of the most picturesque of Coquetdale’s villages. Many of the buildings use pale, biscuit-coloured sandstone. The village is overlooked by the ruins of a 12th-century castle. From here you can walk up to the Drake Stone and the nearby lough.
Ruined castle. Started after 1157, reconstructed in stone C13, extensively rebuilt in 1541. The earliest work is a motte and bailey castle, the finest medieval earthwork in the county.
