Die ehemalige Kreisstadt Glauchau liegt ca. 15 km westlich und die Stadt Chemnitz ca. 20 km östlich der Stadt. Hohenstein-Ernstthal liegt auf dem Übergang vom Nordrand des Erzgebirgsbeckens und dem Südrand des Mittelsächsischen Lößlehm-Hügellandes, das hier in der Anhöhe des Pfaffenbergs ( 479 m ü. NHN) erreicht wird.
