Lieutenant General is a three-star General Officer rank, one pay grade above the highest permanent rank of Major General. Lieutenant General is a temporary position reserved for times of war, and expires with the end of the general's active tour of duty, usually 3 to 5 years.
Courtney Hicks Hodges (born January 5, 1887, Perry, Georgia, U.S.—died January 16, 1966, San Antonio, Texas) was an American army officer who led the First Army across western Europe in 1944–45 during World War II. Hodges enlisted in the army in 1906 as a private and earned a commission as a second lieutenant in 1909.
