The House of Savoy-Carignano (Italian: Savoia-Carignano; French: Savoie-Carignan) originated as a cadet branch of the House of Savoy. It was founded by Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano (1596–1656), an Italian military commander who was the fifth son of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy .
Through its junior branch of Savoy-Carignano, the House of Savoy led the Italian unification in 1861 and ruled the Kingdom of Italy until 1946; they also briefly ruled the Kingdom of Spain in the 19th century.
