Germersheim (German: [ˈɡɛɐ̯mɐsˌhaɪm] ⓘ) is a town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, of around 20,000 inhabitants. It is also the seat of the Germersheim district. The neighboring towns and cities are Speyer, Landau, Philippsburg, Karlsruhe and Wörth.
The fortress surrounding the city centre of Germersheim once covered a length of more than three kilometers. On 18 October 1834, engineer and major Friedrich von Schmauß laid the foundation stone on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of War, but even at the time of its construction, the fortress did not serve its original purpose any more.
