The History of Allentown City – Lehigh Valley History. Published by James J. Haurer – 1902. The only city in Lehigh County is the county seat, Allentown, the Queen city of the Valley and was founded in 1762 by James Allen, from whom it received its name.
History. 18th century. In the early 1700s, the area that is present-day Allentown was a wilderness of scrub oak, where the Lenape, a Native American tribe, fished for trout and hunted for deer, grouse, and other game.
In 1770, William Allen's son James Allen built Trout Hall, which is now a museum. The community was incorporated as a borough in 1811 and became the county seat of newly formed Lehigh County the following year. In 1838, the name was changed to Allentown in honor of its founder.
