The Battle of Sedan was fought during the Franco-Prussian War from 1 to 2 September 1870. Resulting in the capture of Emperor Napoleon III and over a hundred thousand troops, it effectively decided the war in favour of Prussia and its allies, though fighting continued under a new French government .

As dawn broke on 1 September 1870, Emperor Napoleon III was encircled by Prussian forces in the small town of Sedan. After a calamitous campaign, in which his army had seen far more defeats than victories, he had ordered his army (which at this point consisted of 120,000 men and nearly 600 cannons) to retreat to the town on 30 August.
