Since 1965 Richmond has formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. As of 2011 it had a population of 21,469 (in the North Richmond and South Richmond wards). It has a significant commercial and retail centre with a developed day and evening economy.
Richmond upon Thames was established in 1965 by amalgamation of the boroughs of Barnes and Richmond, east of the Thames, which belong to the historic county of Surrey, with Twickenham, historically part of Middlesex.

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames (pronunciation ⓘ) in southwest London, England, forms part of Outer London and is the only London borough on both sides of the River Thames. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963 .

Historia. Se creó en el año 1965 cuando se fusionaron tres zonas pequeñas en virtud del Acta del Gobierno de Londres de 1963: el municipio de Twickenham, de Middlesex con los de Richmond y Barnes de Surrey; las oficinas del consejo se centraron en York House en Twickenham.
