The history of the Royal Marines began on 28 October 1664 with the formation of the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot soon becoming known as the Admiral's Regiment.
The Royal Marines, also known as the Royal Marines Commandos, and officially as the Corps of Royal Marines, are the United Kingdom's amphibious special operations capable commando force, one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy, and provide a company strength unit to the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG).

23 de jul. de 2021 · The Royal Marines may not have started out as officially royal, but they did at least begin because of an order from the king. In 1664, Charles II decreed that a regiment of foot soldiers should be formed specifically for service aboard Royal Navy ships.
The birth of the royal marines. At the outbreak of the Second Dutch War, a special regiment of 1,200 men was raised and trained for service. Known as the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot, these famously loyal soldiers were the Royal Navy’s earliest form of raiding force.
